Chemical signals and cues are basic to all of life, shaping how organisms develop, thrive, and interact with other living systems. Bacteria are ideal for studying such chemical exchange systems, since they are both easy to manipulate genetically and prolific producers of compounds. I will focus the presentation on studies of interspecies interactions that affect the outcome of microbial differentiation.
